i'd like to think that people actually read this, but i know only zainub does, so z, this one's for you!
i only have like 3 more weeks here in miami which is sad, i really like it here. we went to key west the other weekend and it was so much fun. we went waverunning all around the island for 2 hours. the water was green and clear and 80 degrees. at one point there were a family of dolphins swimming right next to us. paradise, i swear. but yea, if you guys are ever in miami its definitely worth the 3 hour drive to go up to keywest for a day or two. all the restaurants are in victorian houses (i love victorian houses). the town has a lot of character. so after playing in the water we went to mallory square for the sunset, its rumoured that you can see a green flash right after the sets. it was cloudy around the horizon though so we didn't see anything. after dinner we went to the bar, sloppy joes, thats supposed to be the happenin place to be. so this band was setting up when we got there, and of course they looked typical EF's (emo fags). pretty much pete wentz times five. so yea, we were expecting a really interesting show, considering half the bar was filled with 40 to 50 yr olds (no idea why, and they were all wearing ohio shirts?). anyhoo, we were pleasantly surprised when they started playing because they were a cover band (thank god). it was tons of fun though, i wish we had time to go back, dont think its gonna happen though. we also went to hemingways house which was neat. his house wasnt huge but it had a huge yard and tons of cats haha. i'll upload the pics to my picasa sometime today.
damn i always think of interesting things to post on here but when teh time comes i blank out. so i'm downloading the waitress, that one keri russel movie where she's a pie maker or something. yea i know, total chick flick, what can i say. ok this entry is turning to crap. see zainub this is what happens when i force myself to update the lj! hopefully next time will be better. later fags.

| 30 Things you need to know about Alton Brown |
[03 Oct 2007|10:21am] |

#1. Alton Brown grinds his own peppercorns. With his teeth.
#2. Alton Brown's chili cheese fries are healthier than raw carrots. Even after he adds the bacon and lard.
#3. Alton Brown brushes his teeth with wasabi and gargles with pickle brine. But still his breath smells like lemon merengue.
#4. Alton Brown can boil a three-minute egg in thirty-seven seconds.
#5. When Alton Brown was born, he collected the hospital slop they'd left for his mother and made it into an zesty, appetizing goulash. The dish fed the entire maternity ward for a week.
#6. In the first, as-yet-unaired episode of Iron Chef America , Alton Brown single-handedly defeated an all-star team of Bobby Flay, Cat Cora, and Hiroyuki Sakai. The secret ingredient was 'whimsy'.
#7. Alton Brown doesn't reduce sauces. He demoralizes sauces.
#8. Alton Brown prepares his fugu blindfolded, with one chopstick and a plastic spork. Alton Brown ain't afraid of no chump neurotoxin.
#9. Alton Brown's blender has four speeds: 'stir', 'mix', 'frappe', and 'plasmify'.
#10. Alton Brown can split a pineapple in half using only his pinkies. For coconuts, though, he has to use his thumbs.
#11. Alton Brown knows where capers come from. And he grows his own, on a Chia pet in the pantry.
ps. no i did not write this, but i wish i did, not gonna lie.

fasting really took its toll on me today. last night we all went out to south beach for al's birthday and got back late, around 1 (yes i know thats not late for normal ppl, but its late for grandmas like me). anyhoo, i stayed up another hour in hopes that it would help me sleep in (lately i've been waking up at 9 on the weekends). unfortunately, mik woke me up at 10 because we had to go pick up our barrels. so we go to ft lauderdale to pick them up, but obviously they won't fit in our car (3 barrels, 4 ft tall) so we emptied them all out into the car in the scalding heat and humidity. when we got home we made many trips up and down 2 flights of stairs to get all the stuff in our apt. then we spent another 2 hours or so putting everything away. my pretty towels got all mildewed in the barrels so we had to do 2 loads of laundry. our stupid machines take 8 quarters per wash/dry so thats 4 freaking bucks for a load. ridiculous. anyhoo, after going to teh grocery store and salivating over everything it was time to cook dinner. it was biryani night. i'll tell ya something, cooking biryani keeps you on your feet for a long time, so its prob not the best idea to make it whilst fasting. i was completely exhausted afterward. after dinner we made brownie sundaes... cant get much better than that. so now i'm sitting here, watching what women want on tbs with tons of clothes lying out on the floor drying (cause the loads were too big so the clothes were still kinda damp after the dryer). i'm contemplating whether or not to start up my netflix again while i'm here. xtorrent doesn't always have everything... but it does have most stuff. i'm excited about the hella season premieres this week. w00t. thats about all thats going on here. oh one more thing, they are opening a chipotle here finally. it hink it should be done early next month. step back qdoba, the king is arriving soon. ok dudes, i'm so effing tired. i'm going to sleep so well tonight....

| miami! |
[12 Sep 2007|11:53am] |
wow its been a month. and quite a lot has happened in that month. lets summarize:
- went through a hurricane - left the island a week early cause of the whole no power/no water situation because of the hurricane which sucked a bit - spent a wonderful 2 and a half weeks at home - moved to miami for 3 months
and here i am! i must say, i am definitely taking a liking to this place. we havent properly been out to south beach yet cause meeks had a test yesterday so he had been studying, and now ramadaan is starting so its gonna be a lot of staying at home. i love where i live though. across the street from our apartment is this place called miracle mile which is like 4 rows of university ave (palo alto). so many cute restaurants, cafes, boutiques, etc. its super convenient, esp since we only have one car here. also, i had been getting used to walking everywhere from being in dominica so this is a nice transition. i'll post some pics once i take more cause we havent been out much since i got here. we haven't even got our barrels yet (we threw a bunch of our stuff into barrels that were shipped from dominica to here via cargo). so here's the deal, all the barrels are here but customs is being ridiculous and won't release the barrels until EVERYONE shows proof of passport. its not like you can show them ur passport and they give you your barrels. quite homo, if i do say so myself. anyhoooo, i cant wait for everyone to visit in october! my brother is coming oct 13th weekend for a couple days and them everyone and their mother is coming the following weekend so that should be very exciting :) i'll try to update this thing more often but as you all know -- my life isnt very exciting. i guess i can make up stories. ok back to work!

sorry i've been caught in a rut of laziness. and i havent been doing ANYTHING exciting lately. mainly because meeks has been having like 2 tests a week. this weekend should be fun though. we plan to go to secret beach on saturday. its a really small beach that you have to kayak to get to. so thats the plan, if it doesn't rain of course. its been raining a hell of a lot lately. so thats another reason i've been doing a whole lot of nothing. the same schedule:
- wake up at 7, go to gym, go to grocery store - shower, start work at 9 - take my lunch break at 3 and cook dinner during it - get off work at 6, eat dinner and watch seinfeld til 7 - another shower (yes i'm aware i shower a lot, but the water has been consistently hot lately which is very nice, so i take advantage of it) - watch more tv, drink chai - possibly read before bed
the weekends consist of: - watching tv/cooking
yesterday night we went out for dinner to this chinese place called brothers. i gotta tell ya, i'm not a fan of chinese food except for chow mein but sesame chicken is the shizzle. ridiculously delicious. the china man's chicken nuggets. money indeed.
well, 10 more days and i'm on a plane back to the states. we have an overnight in puerto rico so that should be fun. the hotel we're staying at is in connected to the airport but hopefully we'll taxi out and get some grub at least. i really hope they have a book store in the airport cause i want to read a thousand splendid suns. k2 mailed it to me though, so hopefully it gets here before i leave haha. THANKS KAMRAN! right now i'm reading last exit to brooklyn which dullah and fahim got me with a bunch of other goodies before i left. its written by the guy that wrote requiem for a dream so its pretty out there. i'll let you guys know how it pans out.
i know i've been posting a lot about books being made into movies and there's yet another good one happening. its called my sisters keeper by jodi picoult. apparently camerion diaz is gonna star in it. its a good read so if you guys are lookin for a book you should check it out. and don't be fooled by the name, its not really a chick book.
not much else goin on my friends. we get our barrels on thursday so i'll start packing then. the barrels will get shipped via cargo to miami and then we can just pick them up when we get there, instead of moving all our stuff back home and then to miami a week later, which is pretty sweet considering meeks has to ship hella books which cause a problem wiht our luggage weight limit.
man, i really want a huge glass of milk!

i straight ganked this from ryans blog. anyhoo, for those of you who haven't seen this -- the lady seems to be spinning clockwise but after looking at it for a minute or so she starts spinning counterclockwise. it took me a while for my brain to flip it, so be patient! i really don't get it, cause its not just that she starts spinning the other way, but the other leg is lifted as well. see for yourself --

today i got my first hot shower in about 4 days. it was the most wonderful shower EVAR. its weird because the water always seems to be cold when it rains out here, which is confusing because i really doubt the water heater is solar powered. anyhoo, i will never take another hot shower for granted (as long as i'm out here at least haha)
well to continue from a couple posts ago about the banquet -- we didn't end up going. reason being, my clothes didn't show up. the banquet was last saturday.. and when did my clothes come? MONDAY. they were one day late. and whats worse is that the package had come earlier that week and they just didnt tell us til monday. oh well, wasn't meant to be.
the weekends here have been getting more and more boring. maybe theyre just becoming more lonely. i'm really looking forward to coming back to the states. i'm not horribly homesick, but i probably will be in a couple more weeks.
well, on a lighter note, the avocados here are ridiculously large. have you guys seen an avocado this big in the states?

our friend here said he got one that was even bigger than this one. ridiculous.
ok friends. sleepy time.

i saw my first snake today. it was outside the laundry room on the step. it was prob like 3 feet long but realllllllllly thin, like how garden snakes are. it was black with yellow spots. apparently the snakes here aren't poisonous, so thats good to know. our landlord was telling me that she stepped on one when she was younger and it bit her. so when i told her i just saw a snake she totally flipped and wanted to go home, lolz.
well its tuesday now and i still havent received my package with my clothes in it. the banquet is looking less and less promising. oh well, i still have 3 more days to get it, we'll see how my luck (or lack thereof) is. not much to report in the past couple of days. we were going to go this place called "secret beach" on monday after mike's exam but we decided to go in a couple weeks instead. the weather has been pretty crappy lately. lots and lots of rain. we'll prob go to blue bay sometime this week so yayyy i get my pina coladas :)
so we have cable here but its stolen from the states and because of this sometimes channels wont work for a while (i'm guessing because they were caught stealing and it was shut down) but then they start working like a week later (i'm guessing cause they steal from another state). so today i was saddened to see that vh1, mtv, cinemax, and the travel channel weren't working :( at least i still have TLC and the other movie channels. i miss the food network :( we don't get that here at all.
ok friends, time to cook dinner. menu for tonight: keema chawal!

if you don't already watch this, then start! season 3 starts mid august so you have a good month and a week to catch up on seasons 1&2. mary louise parker is the main character, what more could you want? they have lots of actors as guest starts too. you can check out season one here.
in other news, i'm a total gimp. i went to the health center on wed to schedule an appt (been having abdominal pains). anyhoo, i go in, schedule my appt, and on my way out of the office i twist my foot. i ended up cancelling my appt anyway cause i figured they were just gonna tell me to take some advil, so basically, i twisted my foot for absolutely no reason at all. its not too bad though, not swollen or anything. just hurts when i walk. hopefully i'll be good as new by the end of the weekend. i got black snake moan off a friend so i'll watch that this weekend. i downloaded running w scissors and watch it on wed. stupid movie. i also downloaded because i said so. i know i know, its a horrible movie. sometimes your just in the mood for a horrilbe lame movie with mandy moore and lorelai gilmore though. naw meaannn?
there's not much else goin on here. there's a banquet on saturday for 4th semesters but i dont have any nice clothes here. so i had my dad mail me some like 3 weeks ago and the package still isn't here :( so yea, if it doesnt come this week i guess no banquet for me. meeks will have to go stag, and i'll be a loner at home. what sucks is that, the package is most probably here at their mail office of whatever but it takes them hella long to actually send it to the school. theyre hella lazy and theres nothing you can do about it. sucks.
i want a pina colada :(

this weekend was pretty calm. no more 6 hour hikes. instead we went out for a friends birthday sat night. instead of going to the regular blue bay, we headed toward a restaurant called "heavens best". i'm glad we went to this one cause the menu was 909809x better than blue bays. however, there were two drawbacks with eating here and not blue bay: no dinner on a beach patio and most importantly, no pina coladas! (yes, virgin, i havent gone wild here). we did have milkshakes though! they had 2 types - french vanilla and fruit salad (wtf?). i'm guessing fruit salad here is like tutti fruiti back home. i played it safe and got the french vanilla which was quite delectable. here's a group pic -- it was shauns birthday, the one to the right of me. theres a couple more at the end of this album.

i'll prob post soon, i get wed off so i'll be pretty much doing nothing. w00t. smell ya later!
